Porcelain Crowns

A dental crown is a prosthetic top or cap that is shaped like a natural tooth. It's called a crown because it is a replacement for the top part of the tooth or its 'crown.' A crown can serve many purposes. It can cover a tooth that is broken or decayed to strengthen and improve the appearance.

If a tooth has worn down over time, it can cover the damage and protect the remaining tooth. It is used as an anchor for dental bridge work and as a cover for a dental implant. It is safe for all ages and is sometimes used to protect baby teeth from decay. Crowns repair, support, and cover teeth. A crown is cut and shaped to completely cover the tooth and then is set in place with cement by us at Edison C. Louie DDS, Inc.. We can help you with any dental procedure, including dental crowns.

Preparing To Order Your Crown.

A crown will strengthen the foundation and structure of your tooth. It will also restore the natural appearance to your teeth and smile. The first step towards getting your crown is a thorough dental examination in our office to determine the damage or fragility of your tooth. Once we're ready to begin the procedure, we will numb the area that the cap will be used for as well as the surrounding area.

Since the instruments used to prepare the tooth to receive a crown come close to sensitive nerve endings, an anesthetic is required. Once the area is numbed, we drill and file away the outer surface of the damaged tooth to create space to affix the crown. The next step taken is to create an impression or mold of your tooth, which can then be sent to a dental lab to have a custom crown created just for you.

Getting Your Permanent Crown.

Crowns can be created from metal, porcelain, resin, or ceramics. Crowns are used to either replace or help support a tooth that is too weak or damaged to work on its own. It replaces the upper portion of your natural tooth. It usually takes several weeks for the crown to be created and returned from the dental lab.

So, as not to leave your damaged tooth exposed, we put a temporary crown on to protect it until the permanent crown arrives. Once the crown arrives, you return to our office to have the temporary crown removed and the new one put in. Dental cement is used to secure the crown firmly in place.

A dental crown restores your tooth's alignment and looks the same as your missing or damaged tooth. A dental crown is an excellent way to strengthen, support, and restore the attractiveness to a tooth.
