Cleanings, Exams, and Oral Cancer ScreeningsA dental cleaning is a procedure that provides the teeth and gums with a full cleaning service. Here at Edison C. Louie DDS, Inc., we can help with all your cleaning needs. Teeth cleaning is simple and painless with the patient left with a beautiful and clean smile. By understanding the process of cleaning, patients can feel less stress and be able to enjoy the results. Physical ExamThe first portion of cleaning is the physical exam. The teeth cleaning portion will be performed by a hygienist. Before the cleaning begins, a physical exam will be conducted involving your entire mouth. We use a small mirror to check the teeth and gums for any signs or symptoms of dental conditions. Take for example inflamed gums, which is a sign of gingivitis. By reviewing your mouth before we begin, we can ensure that your mouth is ready for the cleaning process. If any issues are found, we might have to reschedule to better take care of your teeth. Plaque and Tartar RemovalOnce the mouth has been removed, we are ready for the next step; removing the plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. A small mirror is used to help us see where the plague and tartar are located around the gum line and in between teeth. A scaler is used during this process. During the treatment, you may hear a scraping sound, which is the scaler removing the plaque and tartar from your teeth. In areas where tartar is heavier, the spot may need more attention. With regular brushing and flossing, you can stop the buildup of tartar. Over time, tartar will build up and harden. Once tartar is present, it can only be removed in our office. Toothpaste CleaningOnce the tartar and plaque have been removed from your teeth, a high-powered electric toothbrush is used to provide cleaning with toothpaste. This high-powered method will help to provide a deep clean and remove any tartar that was not removed during the scaler process. This is a polishing process where a unique toothpaste is used. When done by a professional, your teeth will have a beautiful and smooth appearance. FlossingAfter the brushing process, it's time to floss. Even if you floss at home, you may be unable to reach the back areas of your mouth. An expert flossing can ensure your teeth are completely clean. Each tooth is addressed to ensure there are no particles left behind. Rinsing and Fluoride TreatmentThe final steps are rinsing out your mouth and a fluoride treatment. With rinsing, you are removing any leftover debris in your mouth. With a fluoride treatment, you are applying a protectant on the teeth that will help to protect you from cavities for a few months. A foamy gel is applied into a mouthpiece, and the mouthpiece is placed in your mouth. Left on for about a minute, the gel helps to protect your teeth. Oral Cancer ScreeningsIn many instances, we will perform an oral cancer screening during your routine exam. Screening is the best way to reassure you that there are no apparent problems related to oral cancer. We may recommend an oral cancer screening in response to your lifestyle choices, such as excessive drinking or smoking. Most of the time it is simply a precautionary measure. More often than not, an oral cancer screening is a great opportunity for you to ask questions, and reduce your risk factors. If we notice any potential symptoms of oral cancer, we may recommend further testing or a biopsy. It is important to note that additional testing is not indicative of a cancer diagnosis. Additional testing is needed to reveal the root cause of a particular symptom. If cancer is ultimately found, early diagnosis drastically reduces related health problems later down the line.
