Dental Fillings

A filling is a term used to describe a restoration method for tooth damage that is caused by decay. With a filling in place, the tooth can function again normally as the shape is restored. Here at Edison C. Louie DDS, Inc., we can provide fillings with various materials to meet your tooth restoration needs. Before a filling can be placed on a tooth, the decayed material is removed. The affected area must be cleaned and filled with a filling material to function normally.

With the filling material in place, the tooth will be protected from further decay. There are several materials that can be used for fillings, including gold, composite resin, porcelain, and amalgam. The type of filling you choose to use may be based on budget or insurance needs. We can help you choose the right filling for your oral needs based on several factors including affordability as well as durability.

Which Filling Type is Best?

Because every patient is different, the type of filling materials used for the teeth will vary. One type of filling that works for one patient might not work for another. Allergies to certain material types as well as where the filling will be placed need to be considered, along with cost. Learning more about the different materials and how they are used, along with consulting with us during your appointment can help with the filling selection process.

Gold Fillings

One option that most people think of when discussing filling is gold material. Fillings made from gold will be created in a laboratory and placed on the tooth with cement. A gold inlay can last for over two decades and is tolerated well by the gum tissue. Gold is a durable option but one of the more expensive materials when it comes to fillings.

Porcelain Fillings

Another material option for fillings is porcelain. Also known as an onlay or inlay, porcelain is also produced in a lab and bonded to the tooth by the dentist. With porcelain, there is more leeway when it comes to coloring. As the porcelain filling is created, it can be matched to your natural teeth color, which allows the material to blend better. This material is also resistant to staining.

Amalgam Fillings

Also known as silver fillings, amalgam is a material that is dark in color and noticeable. This is the more affordable choice, but an option that is usually reserved for the back teeth as the coloring makes it stand out more. Amalgam is resistant to wear, so it is a durable choice for filling material.

Composite Resin

Another option for filling material, composite resin is similar to porcelain as it can be matched to the color of your teeth. This gives a more natural appearance. However, the material is not as durable and can wear away over time. It is also not stained resistant and can be stained by tobacco and coffee, among other items.
